CANTON – The Canton town historian is organizing a walk Friday, June 21 at noon in Canton to protest the closing of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer newspaper, published by Johnson Newspapers based in Watertown.
“The community is so up in arms about the 163-year-old St. Lawrence Plaindealer being cut from our community. The powers-to-be Johnson Newspaper Corp. did not even consider combining the Plaindealer with the Courier Observer,” writes historian Linda Casserly in an email.
Casserly said the walk will start at Hodskin Street, the one-way street across from the municipal building and continue to the Johnson Newspaper offices at Rushton Place on Main Street.
The historian said walkers will be carrying signs and banners.
“We may not be able to stop this loss of (a) community newspaper, but we sure can try,” writes Casserly.
Those interested in participating, or seeking additional information, can contact Casserly at 315-386-1633 or Brad Mintener at 315-386-2585.
