Canton Central School plans budget hearing May 5, vote on May 17

 CANTON – Canton Central School District hears from the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5 during the official presentation of their 2011-12 budget.

The official budget hearing, in Hugh C. Williams High School Learning Resource Center, is open to comments from qualified voters in the district.

The budget vote and school board election is set for Tuesday, May 17, also in the Williams Learning Resource Center, from noon to 9 p.m. District residents will also vote on any propositions that are on the ballot.

The budget has not been finalized, but information on the budget to be voted upon will be mailed to district residents no later than May 11, and copies of the budget, as well as the tax exemption impact report, will be available in the district office weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning April 28.

There will be three vacancies on the Board of Education this year. All three are for three-year terms. Petition forms will be available Monday through Friday, April 4 through 8, and on Monday, April 18 from Clerk of the Board of Education Cynthia Whitford. at the district office at 99 State St., and from the Canton Free Library, 8 Park St., from Saturday, April 9 through Monday, April 18 during regular library hours.

Nominating petitions must be filed no later than Monday, April 18. On that day, the district clerk will be in the district office to accept petitions until 5 p.m. A drawing for positions on the ballot will be on Tuesday, April 19 at 1 p.m.

Absentee ballots may be obtained from the office on school days between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. before the budget vote, and must be returned by 5 p.m. May 17.
