Brookfield Renewable wants to remind the public in St. Lawrence County to exercise extreme caution when recreating near hydropower dams during winter.
Water doesn’t necessarily always freeze near hydropower facilities the way people might expect. While it may be frozen on the surface, the water is always moving underneath, and ice thickness can vary greatly from one area to another.
The unseasonably warm temperatures and rainfall can cause frozen waters to melt and may pose safety risks for anyone venturing onto the water. Ice is unpredictable and the thickness can vary, even in small areas.
Brookfield Renewable is strongly committed to public safety and to providing a safe recreational experience. They urge extreme caution when snowmobiling, ice fishing or walking on ice at rivers, lakes and streams. Ice conditions can rapidly change, and thin ice can be fatal.
