POTSDAM — A black bear climbed a tree in Ives Park before running to the Raquette River for an evening swim Wednesday night, according to SUNY Potsdam’s Facebook page.
The bear was spotted in a tree near Hamilton Street, a residential area close to downtown Potsdam.
Police and other officials were on scene during the afternoon. Those on the scene estimated the bear to weigh about 100 pounds and believed it to be one- to two-years-old.
The bear explored Ives Park, climbed a tree to take a nap and then returned to the Raquette River and swam to a small island.
