Assemblywoman Russell promoting second annual holiday book drive

For the second consecutive year, Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell (D-Theresa) is partnering with social agencies in St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties to further literacy through her annual holiday book drive, “Addie’s Books for Children.”

Russell is encouraging everyone in the North Country to donate new or gently used books for local children up to age twelve.

“All children deserve to experience the magic of books. Reading not only improves children’s verbal skills and writing abilities but also provides opportunities for enjoyment and family bonding. Reading is fun! Let’s put a book in every child’s hands this holiday season.”

The assemblywoman’s book drive collected more than 1,500 new and gently used books for North Country children in 2009.

“Last year’s drive was a tremendous success,” said Russell of the joint project with the Canton’s Church and Community Program and, in Jefferson County, the Community Action Planning Council (CAPC). “We are starting early to expand the book collection this year. Once again, our goal is to get as many books in as many young hands as possible.”

Boxes have been placed at the Kinney Drugs in Canton in conjunction with the Church and Community Program. The Church and Community Program will distribute the donated books to children and families.

Books can be dropped off until Wednesday, Dec. 15.
