CANTON – Plans for another winter event have been modified due to the unusual temperature swings this season.
The popular twilight sledding at SUNY Canton, which has become a regular feature of the Canton Winterfest, has been postponed from Friday, Feb. 10 to the following Friday, Feb. 17, because there isn’t enough snow.
Among other events whose plans have gone by the wayside due to the weather is the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad’s annual ice fishing derby, which was to be held Feb. 18. A lack of ice in Wheathouse Bay has forced them to cancel the ecent.
Some events at the recent Colton Winterfest including the annual Higley Hustle cross-country ski race had to be canceled.
Canton Chamber of Commerce Director Sally Hill said the SUNY Canton sledding has been put off for a week in hopes that more snow that is predicted for next week actually makes its way onto the hill and stays long enough.
Hill also said the Canton Recreation Department has been trying to get the outdoor rink next to the Pavilion at Lincoln Street into shape for outdoor skating.
Canton Winterfest gets underway tonight as the Canton Chamber of Commerce annual dinner takes place, kicking off more than a week of events around town.
