OGDENSBURG – Although the city’s largely dodged harsh winter snowfall so far, Ogdensburg police are reminding residents that the overnight parking ban is now in effect.
The ban means fines will be levied to drivers who park their vehicles on the roadside between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. until March 31.
The ban has raised discussions from council in the past. In 2016 a council considered a proposal that would have lifted an overnight parking ban on city streets, as weather permits, but the resolution failed to pass.
The idea was to allow the council more discretion to lift the winter parking ban when city crews would not be removing snow or debris from streets.
At the time, former Police Chief Andrew Kennedy said such discretion is often used when enforcing the law but advised that keeping it on the books was probably for the best.
Kennedy told councilors that in some instances city residents call to inform city police they are unable to move their vehicles. He said such cases were handled case by case.
The premise of the ban is to keep vehicles off city streets in winter months to allow plows to clear snow.
