St. Lawrence County received $225,000 to replace existing cesspools and septic systems that are having environmental or public health impacts to groundwater used for drinking water, or water bodies.
The funding comes from the State Septic System Replacement Fund program. The funding will reimburse property owners for up to 50 percent of the eligible costs incurred for eligible septic system projects, up to $10,000.
Only single family, two family and small businesses with an existing design sewage flow not exceeding 1,000 gallons per day and located on or within 250 feet of Black Lake, the St. Lawrence River Main Stem, Little River in the towns of Canton, Pierrepont, Russell; the Lower Portion of the Raquette River from the St. Lawrence to approximately the northerly Potsdam Village boundary; and the Indian River town of Rossie are eligible to participate in this program.
Septic systems must be failing or reasonably likely to fail to be eligible. Seasonal and secondary homes are not eligible for this program.
