The Northern New York Library Network reports that its Northern New York Historical Newspapers project Web site continues to grow, in popularity and in the number of newspapers archived in its database.
At last count, there were 49 different publications, with the number of pages approaching two million.
During the Library Network’s 2009-10 fiscal year, there were over 10 million searches of the site, at http://news.nnyln.net/.
A Florida librarian praised the site for helping her with research of her own family tree and with helping some of her patrons.
“It is a wonderful source when children need access to historical newspapers,” said Mary Toupin, head of adult services at the Titusville, Fla. public library. “I was also able to help a lady do some research on the history of an organization in Canton. She was so excited when she found the information that she wanted.”
The searchable database of historical newspapers has issues from 17 St. Lawrence County newspapers, 10 from Franklin County, three from Jefferson, four from Lewis, five from Essex, six from Clinton and four from Oswego.
