The St. Lawrence University women's crew team saw its three-year reign as Liberty League champions come to an end on Saturday, as William Smith College topped the Saints by 4 seconds in the varsity 8+ race to earn the 2011 championship on the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, NY.

The Scarlet and Brown posted the fastest time, 6:25.8, in the heats while William Smith was second in 6:31.0.  However, a difficult start by St. Lawrence in the finals allowed the Herons to take a lead they would not relinquish, winning with a time of 6:13.5.  The Saints were second in 6:17.5 while Skidmore followed in 6:51.7.

St. Lawrence's varsity 8+ was coxed by Lauren Reed and stroked by Lizzy Stokes-Cawley.  Other members of the boat were Bri Tidd, Alissa McCaffrey, Jeannine Condon, Maggie Fellows, Britton Weber, Maddy Fones and Jesse Burdett.

St. Lawrence did earn victories in both the 2V and Varsity 4 races at the Liberty League Championships.  The 2V held off William Smith by a mere 1.4 seconds with a time of 6:39.6 to claim the win.  The boat was coxed by Kelly Greenwood and stroked by Alie Mihuta, while Anna Lavanger, Catie LePage, Liz Weber, Sally Dankner, Kait Murphy, Alyssa Goley and Amanda Brewer also rowed.

The Varsity 4 posted the fastest time of 7:31.9 in the heats to earn the top seed in the finals.  The Saints protected the slot, rowing in 7:20.0 to defeat both Union (7:25.8) and Skidmore (7:45.1).  Victoria Vossler coxed while Margaret Weiner stroked the boat.  Abigail McIvor, Jenette Kloss and Britne Tyler also competed for the Scarlet and Brown.

St. Lawrence will be in action again next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, at the 2011 New York State Championships in Whitney Point, NY.
