Jack Whelan shot rounds of 75 and 74 for a 149 total and finished tied for second at the NYU/Manhattanville Spring Invitational at the Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck, NY.
Whelan, a transfer student who joined the Saint program in January, shot the best back-to-back rounds of the season for the Saints and helped the team jump from a tie for tenth to sixth overall with his 74 on Sunday on the par 71, 6236 yard course.
Three Saints broke 80 on Sunday as the team showed a 17 stroke improvement over Saturday's best four of five score total of 328. Adrian Bouthot shot 77 and Michael Phelan shot a 79 on Sunday to join Whelan as the Saint top three. Bouthot finished tied for 21st with a 82-77-159 total while Phelan was tied for 51st , bouncing back from an opening round 88 with his 79 on Sunday. Freshman Brandon Lustig tied for 45th with rounds of 83 and 81 for a 164 total and Jack Reardon shot 88-86-174 and tied for 70th.
The Saint total of 311 on Sunday tied for third as the best team round of the day. Skidmore won the tournament with a 310-311-621 total with Middlebury second, Rochester third, Manhattanville fourth, RPI fifth and the Saints sixth in a 13-team field.
