The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team defeated Yale University by the score of 3-1 in New Haven, CT on Friday night in an ECAC Hockey game at Ingalls Rink. Graduate student Maxie Weisz earned the victory in net, as the Severna Park, MD native turned in a 31-save effort.

St. Lawrence improves to 5-6-2 (2-2-0) on the season, while Yale falls to 1-6-2 (1-3-1) in 2010-11.

"We were able to convert on some of our chances to get a lead, and the shorthanded goal was a big jump start for us," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "Maxie was able to keep the game steady as Yale worked very hard and had many good opportunities."

The Scarlet and Brown used a pair of goals only 4:11 apart in the later stages of the opening period to take a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Junior Alley Bero scored a shorthanded goal at 13:02 on Bulldog goaltender Genny Ladiges to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore defenseman Brooke Fernandez assisted on the goal. Sophomore Michelle Ng then followed with her first goal of the year at 17:13, with an assist going to junior Vanessa Emond, to push the Saints' lead to 2-0.

Though Yale matched St. Lawrence in shots on goal through two periods (19-19), Weisz was the difference by keeping the home team off of the scoreboard. Her play in net allowed senior Karell Emard to tack on an insurance goal at 3:04 of the third period to give St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead. Emard's fourth goal of the year was set up by Bero and first-year student Rylee Smith.

The Bulldogs were able to snap Weisz's shutout bid with 4:12 remaining, as Danielle Moncion scored to get Yale on the board, 3-1. Jackie Raines assisted on the goal, but Yale would get no closer as Weisz closed with 12 saves in the final period to earn the win.

Ladiges finished with 29 saves including 12 in the third period, and neither team was able to convert a power play chance (SLU 0-2, Yale 0-4).

St. Lawrence, which is 4-1-1 in its last six contests, will look to sweep the conference weekend series when it travels to Brown University tomorrow, Saturday, November 20. The puck is set to drop on the Saints and Bears at 4:00pm.
