The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team outshot Princeton University 30-21 on Saturday at Appleton Arena, but came away with a 3-1 loss thanks to an impressive 29-save performance in net by the visitor's Rachel Weber. First-year student Caitlyn Lahonen made 16 saves for the Saints, while senior assistant captain Karell Emard scored the home team's lone goal.

Princeton improves to 10-10-1 (7-6-1) on the season thanks to a solid 2-for-3 mark on the power play on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Saints (9-10-2, 4-5-0) will look to snap a three-game skid next weekend against ECAC Hockey rivals Harvard and Dartmouth.

"We certainly had our chances tonight, but Weber and Princeton's defense did a nice job of blocking shots and keeping us away from rebounds," said Saints' head coach Chris Wells. "We'll need to do a better job of finishing next weekend to come away with crucial points in the standings."

The Tigers' defense and Weber have been outstanding as of late, as Princeton had shut out each of its previous four opponents entering Saturday's game. Emard's goal in the third period snapped a 289 minute, 43 second shutout streak, the longest in ECAC Hockey history.

The two squads played a scoreless first period that saw the Scarlet and Brown own the majority of offensive chances, outshooting the Tigers 9-6. Weber kept the home team off the board with several key stops while the Saints had a five-minute power play. She stopped junior Vanessa Emond on a wrap-around try and then later made a key save off a deflection by senior assistant captain Kirsten Roach.

Lahonen was equally impressive in goal for St. Lawrence, as she made six first period saves. The rookie also got some help from classmate Mel Desrochers early in the second period, as Desrochers dove in front of a shot from Princeton's Caroline Park that seemed headed for the goal on a rebound try to keep the game tied 0-0.

Despite being outshot 11-4 in the second period, it was the Tigers who took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission. Olivia Mucha dug the puck out of the corner to Lahonen's left and found Gabie Figueroa near the circle. Figueroa then crossed a pass into the slot for a wide-open Sally Butler, who rifled a one-timer past Lahonen and into the net for her eighth goal of the year and the game's first goal at 17:14.

Princeton would capitalize on a power play try only a few seconds into the final stanza to push its lead to 2-0. Sasha Sherry fired a shot from the blue line, and though Lahonen was in position to make the save, Mucha was in the slot and re-directed the puck between the goalie's pads for her sixth goal of the season at the 18 second mark. Sherry's assist was her 11th of the year.

The Saints would respond with a power play goal of their own to end Princeton's historic shutout streak. First-year student Rylee Smith cut to the net and fired a shot that Weber stopped but was unable to corral. Emard, who was skating hard to the net, knocked the puck out of midair and across the line for her fifth goal of the season to pull St. Lawrence back to within one at 2-1 at 3:39.

As both teams racked up quality scoring chances, it was Princeton who was able to cash in late on the power play to put the game away. The Tigers used a pretty "tic-tac-toe" pass play to set up Danielle DiCesare on the door step, as she fired a shot off the inside of the far post and past Lahonen for the two-goal cushion with only 2:24 remaining in regulation. The goal allowed the visitors to celebrate a 3-1 victory.

St. Lawrence was 1-for-5 on the power play, and was unable to convert on a five-minute major penalty given to Princeton's Krystyna Bellisario, who also received a game misconduct in the first period for hitting from behind.

The Saints will be in action again on Friday, January 14 in Cambridge, MA against the Harvard Crimson at 7:00pm.
