Senior Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) reached the Century Mark in points for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team with a two-goal effort on Saturday afternoon, but 10th-ranked Union College spoiled the celebration as the Dutchmen held off the Golden Knights to earn a 12-9 victory in Liberty League play at Hantz Turf Field.

After a narrow season-opening loss at national powerhouse Cortland State on March 3, the Dutchmen have won seven straight to improve their record to 7-1 overall and to 2-0 in Liberty League play. Clarkson, which saw its three-game win streak come to an end, stands at 7-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Union never trailed against the Golden Knights, holding a 3-1 first-quarter lead and a 5-3 advantage at the break. Clarkson tied the contest 7-7 after three quarters, but the Dutchmen pulled out the win on the road, outscoring the Knights 5-2 over the final 15 minutes.

Trailing by two after 30 minutes, Clarkson opened the second half with goals by Huff and junior Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) to tie the game 5-5 midway through the third quarter. The teams traded two goals apiece to finish off the quarter with Shearin collecting his team-high 21st goal of the season just before the buzzer sounded to end period.

Union, however, took control in the final frame as Rob Santangelo scored twice in the opening five minutes to put the visitors in front for good. After junior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) scored on an extra-man opportunity with 9:08 remaining, Union pulled out to an 11-8 lead on goals by Ethan Myer and Jonathan Andrews with 6:48 left.

Huff closed out Clarkson’s scoring with his 62nd career goal and 100 career point with just under five minutes to play to cut the Dutchmen’s lead to 11-9. Union, however, clinched the victory with a goal by Adam Rosenthal with 51 seconds left on the clock.

Shearin led the Knights with three goals. McCabe finished with three points, including two assists. Freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) set up three goals. Seniors Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT) and sophomore defenseman Dylan Caldiero (Buffalo, NY) rounded out the Knights’ goal scorers.

Santangelo led Union offensively with a game-high four goals. Andrews also tallied four points for the Dutchmen with three goals and one assist.

Union outshot Clarkson 32-29, While the Knights controlled ground balls 32-30.

Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) finished with 10 saves for Clarkson, while Sean Aaron posted nine stops for the Dutchmen. The Knights’ sophomore midfielder Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) led all players with nine ground balls.

Clarkson is back in action on Wednesday, April 11 when it closes out a five-game home stand by hosting archrival St. Lawrence in Liberty League action beginning at 4:00 p.m. game on Hantz Turf Field. Union hosts Williams College in a non-league game this coming Wednesday.
