(Canton, N.Y.)- SUNY Canton fired in 12 3-pointers against Paul Smith’s College Tuesday night and Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.) exploded for a career-high 41 points as the Roos beat the Bobcats for the second time this season with a 97-79 win at St. Lawrence University’s Burkman Gym.

Valentin put on a dazzling display of scoring hitting from the inside and outside where he canned seven triples. The senior guard knocked down all four of his free throw attempts and also had four assists, three rebounds and a steal to add to his stellar night.

SUNY Canton, who had beaten the Bobcats 67-60 on Jan. 28, used the long ball on Tuesday to halt several attempts by the visitors to get back into the game.

Paul Smith’s opened the scoring with a two-point basket on their first possession but Valentin quickly put the Roos on top with a 3-pointer on the Roos first trip down the floor. The lead would then swing in each team’s favor over the next five minutes before Irving Cato (New York, N.Y.) sank a three off an assist from Valentin that would put the Roos ahead for good at 12-11 with 15:08 remaining in the opening half.

That one-point lead was stretched to four when Rob Sanders (New York, N.Y.) picked off a Bobcats’ pass and fed Khalid Vaughn (New York, N.Y.) for a trey making the score 15-11. Vaughn finished with 17 points and nine rebounds and Sanders had seven points off the bench and a key blocked shot in the second half.

The lead swayed between five and eight points for the Roos over the next five minutes and after the Bobcats had pulled within four points on a layup from Chibbona Belowna, Valentin and Jajuan Williams (Richlands, N.C.), who had 14 points and four steals, hit back-to-back threes to extend the lead to 10 points. The Roos outscored the Bobcats 18-13 the rest of the way and led 45-33 at halftime.

SUNY Canton came out hot out of the gates in the second half as they held Paul Smith’s scoreless over the first 2:42 and Valentin and Williams each came up with a steal and a layup and another layup from Cato made it an 18-point lead after the 6-0 spurt.

The Bobcats trimmed the lead to eight points on two separate occasions in the final 10 minutes but the deep shooting from Valentin, Williams and Vaughn squashed any hopes the Bobcats had of making a serious comeback.

Silvon John (Bronx, N.Y.) added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Roos (3-14) who out rebounded the Bobcats 40-35. SUNY Canton shot 50 percent from the floor.

Kashean Alston had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bobcats (5-14) and Belowna finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
