OSWEGO -- A short-handed goal in the third period lifted the Oswego Lakers (3-4-3, 1-3-3 ECAC West) to a 2-1 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team in an ECAC West match up on Friday.

Junior forward Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) scored the Bears’ goal on the power play in the second period.

Freshman goaltender Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) made 41 saves for Potsdam.

After a scoreless first period, Laker forward Olivia Boersen drew first blood just 3:38 into the second stanza.

After the goal, three straight penalties put Oswego on the defensive.

The Lakers killed off two penalties, but junior defenseman Breanna Roy (Orleans, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats) set up Lewis’ goal on the third at the 12:45 mark.

Both penalty kill units were sharp for the rest of the period, as the squads traded infractions.

The score remained 1-1 after 20 minutes. After the Bears killed off a Roy penalty early in the third period, Oswego got into more penalty trouble, getting whistled for four more.

Unfortunately a broken play led to an Alex Szypryt short-handed tally at the 9:36 mark. Potsdam continued to battle and pulled Salvarinas late, but was unable to even the score.

Bears Head Coach Jay Green was happy with the performance, despite a few bad breaks.

“Our effort and execution were good tonight, but a few broken plays led to their goals,” said Green.

“We had a lot of good opportunities and either team could have come out on top. Dawna Salvarinas was fantastic in goal.”

Potsdam (1-5, 1-4) will get another shot at the Lakers tomorrow night in Oswego at 7 p.m.
