FREDONIA -- The SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team fought valiantly in the second half on Saturday, but was unable to complete its comeback in an 11-8 defeat at Fredonia State.
The Bears (4-9 overall, 0-5 SUNYAC) fell behind 6-0 and didn’t score until late in the first half.
Consecutive goals by senior Samantha Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, Conn.) brought Potsdam to within two in the second half, but the Blue Devils (10-3, 3-2) responded with back-to-back tallies, putting the game out of reach.
Simmons totaled three goals, while junior Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y.) finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Bears.
Junior goalie Kaci Milligan (Liverpool, N.Y.) posted nine saves, taking her seventh loss of the year. Juniors Sierra Langkammerer (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Aubrey Macintosh (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) tallied one goal each for Potsdam, who committed just five turnovers while forcing 16.
Fredonia outshot Potsdam 32-26 for the contest.
The Bears begin a three-game home stand this Tuesday, April 19, against Cortland. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Maxcy Hall Turf Field.
