The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team was unable to hold onto a late lead Saturday, falling 52-45 at Brockport in a State University of New York Athletic Conference showdown.
Senior captain Aimee Kellicutt gave the Bears (3-17 overall, 2-11 SUNYAC) a 42-35 lead on a 3-pointer with 5:31 to play. That field goal ended up being Potsdam’s last for over five minutes as Brockport made a 16-0 run, taking advantage of a bevy of missed shots and one turnover in a five-plus minute stretch.
The Golden Eagles (6-14, 4-9) made 8-of-10 from the free throw line to close the game. Sophomore Katy Briedis’ 3-pointer with 12 seconds left was the lone Bears’ basket in the last 5:31 of the contest.
“We just couldn’t score in those last five minutes,” Potsdam coach Tara Ruckh said. “We talked about playing good defense and executing offensively, like we did to take the lead. We allowed too much dribble penetration … the momentum changed and (Brockport) hit their free throws.”
Potsdam, which forced 25 turnovers while committing just 12 of its own miscues, led 20-17 at the half thanks to stingy defense and a 10-0 run midway through the period. Brockport shot just 27.8 percent from the field in the frame.
In the second half, the Bears matched their largest lead of the game at 39-30 with 7:21 to play after a jumper by junior Sophie Parks (Bogart, Ga.).
“We were only up by three after the first half, but we were playing great defense,” Ruckh said. “So we’re dealing with inconsistency. No we have to do whatever it takes to get to the playoffs.”
The Bears stand one game behind Plattsburgh for the final spot in the SUNYAC Tournament with five games to play.
Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y.) totaled a team-high 15 points to go along with four assists and three steals. Briedis (Canton, N.Y.) finished with nine points, four rebounds and three steals, while Parks tallied eight points and four rebounds.
Potsdam hosts Cortland on Friday at 6 p.m. in the second installment of Bear Pride Night at Maxcy Hall. All fans in attendance will be eligible for contests and prizes throughout the night.
