(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team continued their impressive hot streak as they won their fifth straight game on Tuesday beating the University of Maine at Presque Isle 69-54 at St. Lawrence University.

The Roos have now won eight of their last nine games as they improved to 8-2 in the Sunrise Conference and 10-9 overall with their second win over the Owls this season.  The Roos need to win one of their final two conference games this weekend against either Fisher College or the College of St. Joseph to secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament in two weeks in Maine.  Either way the Roos and Owls will square off once again in the semifinal round as they have done the past two seasons.  The University of Maine at Fort Kent has secured the top seed and the Roos and Owls will either be No. 2 or No. 3.

SUNY Canton earned the season sweep of the Owls by aggressively attacking Presque Isle’s defense on Tuesday.  The Roo took a remarkable 44 trips to the free throw line after the Owls were whistled for 27 fouls in the game.  The Roos converted 29 of those attempts as Ilijana Todorovic (Banja Luka, Bosnia) went 6-for-7 at the stripe, Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) was 7-for-9 and Mindy Small (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) was 7-for-10.

The Roos had a dominating rebounding day as well as they held a 53-30 advantage in that category and hauled in a remarkable 30 offensive rebounds to just nine by the Owls.  The Roos also had eight steals and forced 25 Presque Isle turnovers.

SUNY Canton scored the first four points of the game and after falling behind later in the half, tied the score after a Todorovic layup and then went on a 9-1 run to close the half and lead 26-18 at the break.

The Roos clamped down on defense to start the second half and held the Owls scoreless over the first five minutes while stretching their lead to 32-18.  Brittany Crump (North Lawrence, N.Y.) converted a layup with 9:50 remaining that gave the home team their largest lead at that point at 46-30.

After the Owls trimmed the lead to nine points three minutes later, the Roos went back to the charity stripe and hit six straight free throws to push the lead back to a comfortable double-digit margin.  Small hit a pair during that stretch and Kenyon hit four in a row.

Two more free throws from Small in the final minute of play then extended the lead to 19 points before a pair of Presque Isle baskets closed out the scoring.

Todorovic posted her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) added 15 points and six boards.  Small finished with 13 points and six assists.  Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) had eight points and eight rebounds and Kenyon had seven points and four rebounds.

Renee Moore had 12 points and four rebounds off the bench and Julie Peers added 10 points and six rebounds.
