SLU's Vargo posts career-best finish with Nordic ski team at Dartmouth Carnival

St. Lawrence University Nordic skier Steven Vargo picked up a 23rd place finish, the best of his collegiate career, on Saturday at the 2011 Dartmouth Carnival in Hanover, NH.

Vargo led the Saints men's team to seventh place overall in the 20K Classic. The senior captain raced in 1:04:40.2 to earn 24.0 points, while graduate student Zach Wetherell and junior Adam Terko capped the scoring behind 32nd and 33rd place showings.

First-year student Eric Lustgarten also had a career-best race, earning 39th overall. Sophomore Connor Hunt (48th) and senior Kyle Marvinney (49th) rounded out the men's team's roster in the event.

On the women's side, Leah Hart extended her streak of top-15 finishes to seven races with a 14th place showing in the 15K Classic on Saturday. The Meredith, NH native clocked in at 53:52.8 to earn 29.0 points. Senior Sophie Allen (42nd) and rookie Amanda Moreland (44th) completed the team's scoring, landing the Saints in ninth position.

Sophomore Kelsey Nichols (45th) and first-year student Amy Cymerman (54th) also represented St. Lawrence in the 15K Classic.

Dartmouth College swept both the men's and women's team titles with 138.0 and 130.0 points, respectively. Dartmouth's Sam Tarling won for the second straight day in the men's race, while UVM's Caitlin Patterson also won for the second consecutive day on the women's side.

Both the St. Lawrence men's and women's Nordic teams will compete in the 2011 Middlebury Carnival at the Rikert Ski Center next weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 18 and 19.
