St. Lawrence University sophomore alpine skier Ashley-Kate Durham earned her third top-5 finish of the 2011 season on Friday at the Middlebury Carnival. Durham was fourth overall in the women's slalom, while rookie Ben DeFlavio paced the men's alpine team in 24th.
St. Lawrence's women's team finished in sixth place overall on Friday despite only two skiers having earned points. The men's team was seventh overall with 56.0 points.
Durham finished the slalom in 1:34.02, landing the Timmins, ON native 41.0 points for the Scarlet and Brown. Classmate Ann West chipped in a 22nd place showing to add to the Saints' total. However, the team's point total froze at 62.0, as senior Kelly Skinner and rookie Caroline Barry did not finish their second runs and both junior Elena Rogers and first-year Hayley Best were disqualified.
On the men's side, DeFlavio raced the slalom in 1:40.92 to finish in 24th. The Waitsfield, VT native was awarded 23.0 points, while junior Matt Dodge (31st) and rookie Dustin Martin (32nd) capped the team's scoring.
Junior Wyatt McKibbon made his carnival debut on Friday, finishing 36th overall. Senior Thatcher Jacques (49th) and sophomore Cory Ransom (52nd) rounded out the Saints' line-up.
The University of Vermont swept the men's slalom, as the team earned 135.0 points and Kevin Drury claimed the individual title. Meanwhile, Dartmouth did the same in the women's event, as the Big Green won the team title with 129.0 points and Annie Rendall captured the individual crown.
Both the St. Lawrence University men's and women's alpine teams will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, February 19 in the giant slalom at the Middlebury Carnival.
