PAUL SMITHS -- St. Lawrence University junior All-America Jenna Hulton claimed the opening race of the 2010 women's cross country season on Wednesday as she won the North Country Five meet hosted by Paul Smith's College.

The Saints, who entered the season ranked No. 2 in the national polls and atop the Atlantic Regional rankings, claimed the top-5 spots on Wednesday and had 11 top-15 finishes.

"Today's competition was a low key race, but it was certainly a good opportunity for our younger runners to get some collegiate experience," said St. Lawrence head women's cross country coach Mike Howard. ‘I think this will help them develop individually and help us as a team down the stretch of the season."

Hulton won the women's 5k race by nearly a minute in 20:00.6, followed by senior teammate Megan Derby in 20:56.5. Junior Melanie Solandt was third overall in 21:36.5, while McKayla Nuffer and Katie Mannix finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sophomore Andrea Maynard (8th), rookie Kate Sneden (9th) and sophomore Erikka Nuffer (10th) also landed top-10 finishes in the opening race.

Rounding out the Saints' line-up at Paul Smith's were Kayla Vodacek (11th), Machele Clark (13th), Katie Loignon (15th), Bailey Furtak (23rd) and Nicole Eigbrett (25th).

St. Lawrence, which was without defending national champion Wendy Pavlus on Wednesday, will have their first true test of the 2010 season next weekend, Friday, September 17 at the Oneonta Invitational/Pre-Regional which will feature several premier teams in the country.
