St. Lawrence University's men's squash team received a five-game win from Amay Merchant at two and won four of five matches from five through nine to beat Middlebury College 5-4 at Belmont Hill on Sunday, earning Hoehn Cup consolation honors at the College Squash Association team nationals.
The Saints went 2-1 in the competition, losing their opener to 12th-ranked Brown 5-4, but coming back with 5-4 wins over Navy and Middlebury. By winning the consolation title, the Saints will finish the season ranked 13th nationally, the highest ranking in program history. SLU went 13-9 in dual match competition including the Hoehn Cup competition.
The Middlebury match was a tight one from top to bottom with only two of the nine matches going in three straight games.
Alex Dodge lost to Middlebury's Valentin Quan 3-1 at one, but Merchant came through with a big win at two, beating Jay Dolan 3-2. Merchant won the first two games 11-4 and 12-10 before Dolan rallied to tie the match with 11-5 and 11-9 wins in games three and four. Merchant took the tiebreaker 11-4.
Vir Seth lost in four to Parker Hurt at three, winning the first game 11-3 before Hurst prevailed in extra points in games two and three, both by 13-11 scores, and clinched the match with an 11-7 game in game four. Brian Cady of Middlebury beat Jermaine Xaba 3-0 at four.
The Saints won at five, six, seven and nine to complete the match victory. Will Campo beat Spencer Hurst of Middlebury 3-1 at five, winning game one 12-10 before Hurst took game two 11-5. Campo won the match with a pair of 11-8 wins in games three and four. Tyler Stout edged Bill Moore 3-1 at six, coming back from a 12-10 first game loss to win 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 while Michael Badali won his first two games with Cooper Redpath 11-8 and 11-6 before Redpath extended the match with a 11-7 win in game three. Badali finished it out with an 11-8 win in game four. Thoma Kraft lost a see-saw match with Addison DiSesa at eight, as Kraft won games one and three 11-8 and 11-7, but DiSesa took game two 11-5, game four 11-5 and won the match with a 12-10 win in game vie. Woeltz beat Chris Ivsin 3-0 at nine, winning game one 13-11 and taking the next two games by 11-7 scores.
