CANTON - Members of the St. Lawrence University field hockey team will travel through Brazil from August 4 through 11, competing against three Brazilian National Select Teams and working with youth groups on their sport's skills.
Head Coach Fran Grembowicz says that the excursion has been planned for more than a year, with team members participating in a variety of fund-raising events to make the trip possible.
"The team wanted an international experience," Grembowicz said, adding that in addition to working out, competing and volunteering, the group plans to get in some sight-seeing as well. "We've been doing a lot of planning, sharing information about Brazil and its culture."
They will spend time in Sao Bento do Sapucai, Rio de Janeiro and Buzios, with planned activities including a visit to a small working farm, samba lessons, snorkeling and a visit to the famous "Christ the Redeemer" statue.
The field hockey team's roster includes 36 students; all but three will participate in the trip. Their first scheduled game of the season is September 4, at home.
