Second-half surge not enough for SUNY Potsdam women in home finale of basketball

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team made a furious rally in the second half Tuesday night, but fell just short in a 67-53 defeat against Plattsburgh State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference contest at Maxcy Hall’s Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.

The Bears (3-20 overall, 2-14 SUNYAC) whittled a 13-point halftime deficit to 47-43 thanks to a full-court press, which caused 14 Plattsburgh turnovers in the second half, and easy offensive opportunities.

The run was short-lived, however, as the Cardinals (7-15, 4-12) stormed back with a 7-0 run, taking a 54-43 advantage with 5:46 to play and forcing a Potsdam timeout.

“We made some adjustments at halftime and went on a nice run but unfortunately couldn’t sustain it,” Potsdam coach Tara Ruckh said. “I liked the effort, especially in the second half, but we need to put together a full 40 minutes.”

Senior captains Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y.) and Brittany Whitton (DeKalb, N.Y.) performed valiantly in the final home game of their careers. Kellicutt, the Bears’ leading scorer and rebounder, posted 20 points and 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. Whitton registered 14 points and six rebounds, making all three of her 3-point attempts in the first half.

Sophomore Katy Briedis (Canton, N.Y.) added eight points for Potsdam, which shot 29.3 percent for the game compared to 44.4 percent for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals shot 16-of-19 from the free throw line, including 14-of-17 in the second half to help seal the win. The Bears shot 12-for-14 from the stripe.

In the first half, Potsdam fell behind 21-10 just under midway through the half before three different players combined to knock down a trio of 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 25-21 at the 5:50 mark. Plattsburgh opened up its lead again, scoring on three of its final four possessions to take a 35-22 advantage into the locker room.

“It was a story of two halves for us,” Ruckh said. “We didn’t execute very well offensively and we didn’t play particularly well on defense. It was a much better second half.”

The Bears conclude the regular season this weekend at Fredonia (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Buffalo State (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
