Salem's OT goal lifts Saints men's hockey over No. 12/13 Clarkson

Luc Salem picked a great time to score his first collegiate goal.

The first-year defenseman from Santa Monica, California, created a turnover at his own blue line, then shook a defender at the Clarkson blue line with a spin move before lifting a shot top shelf and knocking the water bottle off the net 57 seconds into overtime to lift the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over the No. 12/13 Golden Knights on Friday night at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, New York.

The goal capped a come-from-behind win for the Saints, as David Jankowski tied the score with a power play goal eight minutes into the third period. Junior goaltender Emil Zetterquist continued his stellar play for the Saints, making 36 saves on 37 Clarkson shots, including 28 saves in the first two periods, as the Golden Knights outshot St. Lawrence 29-17 through the first 40 minutes.

"I'm excited for our guys," said Charles W. Appleton II Head Men's Hockey Coach Brent Brekke. "We recognized we weren't playing our game in the first two periods, and finished with a better third and OT. We hung in there and Zets played great again to keep it tight, which gave us a chance."

St. Lawrence, now 3-1-2 overall and in ECAC Hockey play, is now tied for first place in the conference standings with Quinnipiac, which posted a 3-0 regulation win over Colgate. The win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Golden Knights and was the first for St. Lawrence against Clarkson at Cheel Arena in nearly six years.

After a scoreless first period, Josh Dunne gave Clarkson a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the second, taking a cross-ice feed from Anthony Callin inside the left faceoff circle and sweeping the puck into a wide open net.

Jankowski tied the game from almost the same spot 20 minutes later, lifting his shot over Clarkson goaltender Ethan Haider's right shoulder for his second goal of the season. Cameron Buhl and Philip Alftberg earned assists on the play.

Salem's goal gave the Saints — who outshot Clarkson 14-8 in the third period and overtime — their first 3-on-3 overtime win after two ties (one shootout win and one shootout loss) earlier this season.

The Saints were 1-for-5 on the power play and killed off all five Clarkson power play opportunities. Haider made 29 saves for the Golden Knights, who fell to 7-6-1 overall, 2-3-1 in ECAC Hockey.

The two teams will face each other once again at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Appleton Arena.
