Saints women's squash team wins Epps Consolation final at CSA Team Nationals

St. Lawrence University's women's squash team was the first upset victim of Georgetown university in the Epps Cup competition at the Women's College Squash Association National Championships at Princeton, but the Saints bounced back to win their next two matches, beating Boston College 5-4 and Colgate 7-2 in the consolation finals.

Georgetown, which went on to win the Epps Cup despite being the seventh seed in the competition, beat the Saints 6-3 on Friday in the opening round. The Saints lost at the top of the lineup against Boston College in the consolation semifinals, but won all of the matches from five through nine for the 5-4 win and captured the consolation final with a 8-1 win over Colgate. The Saints finish the 2010-11 season with a 5-11 overall record.

In the Georgetown match, Jen Hearn and Frances Robinson lost in three games at one while Molly Caplan lost 3-2, coming from 2-1 down with an 11-8 win in game four to force the fifth game, but Carolyn Meister prevailed 11-9 for the win.

Mimi O'Connor won 3-2 at four as she lost to Caroline Palmer 11-4 in game one, won games two and three by 11-6 and 11-3 scores, lost game four 11-7 and won the decisive fifth game 11-9. Kendall Harty started a perfect weekend with a 3-1 win over Hilary Ross, coming back from a 11-8 first game loss to win 11-2, 11-9 and 11-4. Corey McHugh lost in three at six, and Patty Poekel lost in five at seven as Lindsay Kolowich rallied from 2-1 won to win. Charlotte Edson was a 3-0 winner at eight while Parker Benedict lost in a close match at nine 11-5, 13-11, 11-9. Liz Levering won the non-counting exhibition at ten 3-1, coming back from a first game loss to win 16-14, 13-11, 12-10.

Against Boston College Hearn and Caplan both went five games, but lost while McHugh and Poekel won in five at six and seven. Harty's second straight victory of the weekend clinched the team victory while Edson, Parker at Levering also won at eight, nine and ten. The BC match had not been posted by the officials from CSA as of mid-afternoon Monday. Additional details will be posted when the match summary is available.

In the consolation championship match against Colgate, the Saints rolled to the 8-1 win.

Hearn beat Peyton Hawkins 3-1 at one while Robinson was a 3-2 winner over Tara Carey at two, taking games one and two 11-9 and 11-4, losing three and four by 11-6 and 11-5 scores and winning the fifth game 11-7. Caplan was a 3-0 winner at three, O'Connor won 3-0 at four, Harty was a 3-0 winner at five and McHugh won 3-0 at six.

Courtney Burke edged Poekel at seven, winning games one and two by 11-9 scores before Poekel battled back to tie with 11-8 and 11-3 wins. Burke won the fifth game 11-7. Edson allowed only one point in a 3-0 win at eight, Benedict won 3-9 at nine and Levering won another close one at ten, 3-2 in the exhibition match.
