Saints women's lacrosse tops Cazenovia for first win

Sophomore Kylie Murphy scored a season-high six goals and added three assists for nine points to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to an 18-4 non-conference win over Cazenovia on Tuesday night in Englewood, Florida.

Murphy also picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover, while Alexandra LaMotte scored four goals and assisted on four others for eight points. Liddy DeConto and Callie O'Neil each recorded two goals, while Jaime Allen tallied a goal and an assist. Colby Hoffman, Nicole Stanton and Hannah Drechsel each scored once and Emma Owens grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers.

The Scarlet and Brown struck early and often, taking a 5-0 lead before the midway point of the first half.

Jenna Townsend put the Wildcats on the board and traded goals with Stanton, before the Saints added seven straight for a 13-2 advantage. The Saints outscored the Wildcats 5-2 down the stretch, securing their first win of the season.

"It was a great team effort tonight," said head coach Hannah Corkery Collins '11. "Everyone was able to contribute to the team's overall success. The process is always more important than the product and we are really proud of the process so far. We are looking forward to building off tonight's success."

Townsend led Cazenovia with four goals, one caused turnover and won five draw controls. Geena Terrance recorded one assist, while Michaela Breeze picked up a team-best six ground balls and caused five turnovers.

Saints' goalkeeper Olga Lukas finished with three saves for the Saints, while Amanda Drazek recorded 14 for the Wildcats.

The Saints outshot the Wildcats 35-11 and held a 32-7 shots on goal advantage.

St. Lawrence improved to 1-3 on the season, while Cazenovia fell to 0-2 overall.

The Saints will take on Hamilton on Thursday, March 21 at 10 a.m. in Englewood, Florida before heading back home to the North Country.
