Saints women's lacrosse edged by Vassar in league action

Senior midfielder Alexandra LaMotte scored a season-best five goals, but the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team was edged by Vassar, 12-9, in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Emma Owens added two goals for the Scarlet and Brown, while Kylie Murphy tallied a goal and an assist and Liddy DeConto scored once. Annie Wilson and Isabel Silvia each caused two turnovers, while Saints' goalkeeper Olga Lukas picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Silvia and Morgan Barlow each won three draw controls for the Saints.

The Brewers opened scoring with two goals in the first five minutes of play, but the Saints scored three straight goals from LaMotte, Murphy and Owens to take a 3-2 lead with 21 minutes remaining in the first half.

Kelly Pushie and Caeli Porette put the Brewers back on top, 4-3, just under three minutes later. LaMotte recorded back-to-back tallies and DeConto scored to make it 6-4 Saints, but the Brewers tacked on two more goals to even the score 6-6 at halftime.

The Brewers opened the second half of play with three straight goals and outscored the Saints 6-3 in the second half to claim their first Liberty League win of the season.

Porette led Vassar with three goals and an assist, while Pushie added two goals and two assists for the Brewers. Grace Goodwin-Boyd also scored two goal, while Fiona MacLeod scored once and assisted on two others and four other members of the Brewers' squad each scored once. Porette won six draw controls, while Ashley Roberts and Sydney Nemphos each caused two turnovers.

Lukas made eight saves for the Saints, while Jackie Molloy recorded four saves for the Brewers.

Vassar outshot the Saints 33-20 and held a 20-13 shots on goal advantage, while the Saints edged the Brewers in ground balls, 20-19.

The Saints fell to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, while Vassar improved to 4-2 and 1-0.

St. Lawrence will travel to Troy, New York to take on Trinity College in a neutral site matchup at RPI on Wednesday, March 27 at 6 p.m.
