The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team downed the Union Dutchwomen 53-43 and clinched its share of the Liberty League regular season title Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, NY.
With the victory, St. Lawrence will host the conference championships next weekend and, based on tiebreakers, will be the no. 1 seed. The Saints enter playoffs 19-5 overall with a 10-4 record in the league.
First-year student Hannah Wilson led all Saints scorers with 12 points. Junior co-captain Katie Edgerton tallied 10 points and nine rebounds while sophomore Erica Spera chipped in 10 points of her own with four rebounds.
St. Lawrence, who held a 26-16 advantage at halftime, never trailed in the game. Union cut the deficit to four points (30-26) at the 13:46 mark, however that is the closest they would come. The Saints stretched their lead to as many as 15 points en route to the 53-43 victory.
No. 1 seeded St. Lawrence will battle #4 Vassar in the Burkman gymnasium on Feb. 25. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm. No. 2 seeded William Smith will play the early game against #3 Union at 6:00pm.
