Saints top NYU-Poly, Salem State in softball to earn sweep

The St. Lawrence University softball team swept its competition at the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday afternoon in Fort Myers, FL. The Saints (3-1) opened the day with a 3-1 win over NYU-Polytechnic, and then edged Salem State by the score of 2-1.

Junior captain Liz McGinley picked up the win over NYU behind six hitless innings and first-year student Kyle Plimpton entered in the last inning in relief to get the save. Plimpton earned the win in the second game of the day against Salem State to move to 2-0 on the season.

Sophomore Leslie Stratton led the Saints offensively as she went 3-for-6 with two runs, a double, a triple and an RBI. Senior Chelsea Hanno went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and a run.

Against NYU, neither team was able to produce baserunners until Hanno doubled to center field in the third inning. Junior Lauren Weisbarth bunted a single and advanced to second on an errant throw by the NYU pitcher, which allowed Hanno to score. Stratton then smacked a triple to center field that plated Weisbarth to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage after three innings.

NYU-Poly had a chance to cut into the deficit in the fifth as they drew two walks with no outs; however, McGinley got out of the inning unscathed with one of her four strikeouts and help from a solid defense behind her.

In the top of the sixth with a runner on second and one out, the Saints tagged the lead runner trying to advance on a fielder's choice. Hanno made a phenomenal diving catch in center field on the next play to end the inning with the Saints still on top 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, Stratton again started things off for St. Lawrence, hitting a double to center field. Cavellier followed with a single up the middle to plate her teammate to extend their lead to 3-0.

NYU's two hits of the game came in the top of the seventh, allowing the Blue Jays to cut the score to 3-1. Plimpton entered on the mound in relief, forcing the batter to fly out and then striking out the next batter to preserve McGinley's 3-1 win and earn the save.

In the second game of the day, the Saints were the first to get on the board as a double by Allen plated Stratton, 1-0. Sophomore Caroline Kieltyka singled to center on the next play to bring home Allen, who scored the winning run on a nice sliding play under the catcher's tag to bring the score to 2-1.

Salem State had a good chance to score in the top of the second inning with bases loaded, but Plimpton struck out the batter looking to escape the inning unharmed. In the third inning however, the Vikings got on the board with two hits and the help of some St. Lawrence errors. Plimpton, though, buckled down to force a fly out and then struck out the next batter to get out of the inning with the score 2-1 in favor of the Saints.

Though Nicole Wilson and the Salem defense kept St. Lawrence off the bases after the second inning, the Saints came up with some big defensive plays throughout the game to earn the 2-1 win and a sweep on the day.

The Scarlet and Brown will play Curry College and Mount Saint Mary tomorrow at 5:00pm and 7:00pm at the Lee County Fields.
