CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (2-4) used a strong second half to hand the SUNY Potsdam men’s lacrosse team (3-5) its fourth straight loss Tuesday afternoon. Junior Matt Pope and sophomore Justin Ingram each scored three times in the Saints’ 13-2 win. Junior Peter Pike (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) and sophomore Derek Frost (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) each scored for Potsdam.

Scoring chances were even early in the contest, but both goalies, Potsdam senior Pat Corbine (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and St. Lawrence sophomore Jack Nuland, frustrated the offenses with big saves. Neither team broke through until 1:05 left in the first quarter, when sophomore Cody Danforth gave the Saints a 1-0 lead. Bears’ junior Zeppy O’Geen (Massena, N.Y./Massena) set up Pike just 42 seconds later and the first quarter ended in a 1-1 tie.

St. Lawrence took control of the game in the second 15 minutes, opening the quarter on 4-0 run and tightening up its defense. Frost stopped the run at the 3:35 mark to close the gap to 5-2, but that would be as close as Potsdam would get. The Saints added another score with 30 left and took the 6-2 lead into the half.

The second half was even tougher for Potsdam as St. Lawrence dominated the time of possession and further limited the Bears’ offensive opportunities, while outscoring the visitors 7-0.

In goal for Potsdam, Corbine allowed 11 goals and made 11 saves in 54:09. Sophomore Paul Gordon (Maine, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) made two saves and allowed two goals in the final 5:51. Also playing the first 54:09, Nuland made 12 saves and allowed the two Bear goals. Junior Matt Ruscio was untested in the remainder or the contest for the Saints.

O’Geen won 13 of 16 faceoffs for Potsdam. The Bears were 0-4 on the man advantage and St. Lawrence was 1-6.

Potsdam looks to bounce back when it hosts Brockport in its SUNYAC opener at noon on Saturday, April 2. The Bears edged the Golden Eagles on the road, 9-8, last May.
