The St. Lawrence University men's and women's alpine ski teams concluded the 2011 carnival season on Sunday, as the teams raced in the giant slalom at the EISA Championships hosted by Bates at Sunday River. Following the event, NCAA bids were announced and sophomore Ashley-Kate Durham will represent the Scarlet and Brown for the second consecutive season.
Durham, who has three top-7 finishes this season, will compete at the national championships from March 9-12 in Stowe, VT.
On Sunday, sophomore Ann West led the Saints women's team with a 14th place finish in the GS. The Boulder, CO native, who narrowly missed out on an NCAA bid, raced in 2:35.47 to earn 28.0 points, leading her team to eighth in the team standings.
Junior Elena Rogers (34th) and senior Kelly Skinner (41st), competing in her last collegiate event, rounded out St. Lawrence's scoring. Sophomore Bridget Gilroy (50th) and Durham (DNF) also competed in the women's GS.
On the men's side, first-year students Ben DeFlavio and Nick Scalia helped the Saints to a seventh place showing overall. DeFlavio earned a career-best 16th place showing with a time of 2:29.81, while Scalia followed in 25th position. Senior Thatcher Jacques, also competing in his final collegiate race, was 31st to cap the scoring at 62.0 points.
Rookie Dustin Martin finished one spot back of Jacques in 32nd, while sophomore Pete Smith (39th) and junior Matt Dodge (44th) also represented St. Lawrence in the men's GS.
The University of Vermont, which will host the 2011 NCAA Championships next week, swept the team titles in the giant slalom on Sunday at the EISA Championships. Kevin Drury also earned an individual crown on the men's side for the Catamounts, while Williams College's Geordie Lonza won the women's race.
