Saints outlast Knights in basketball thriller at Alumni

Potsdam, NY – Four free throws in the final 30 seconds were enough to break a tie and give St. Lawrence a one-point 68-67 victory over the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in Liberty League contests, while St. Lawrence evened its mark at 10-10 overall and 6-4 in conference games. Clarkson will look to hang on to its playoff hopes this weekend with a games against Hobart and Hamilton

The first time that St. Lawrence and Clarkson met two weeks ago in Canton, the two teams struggled to find any rhythm offensively in the first half. That was not the case Tuesday night, as the two teams combined to shoot 50 percent from the floor. However, that each team went about getting its points certainly varied, as St. Lawrence pounded the ball inside with mixed results. Sophomore Nick Meunier came off the bench for the Saints and scored 10 points, shooting 5-for-6 from the floor, but a few other inside players for St. Lawrence struggled against the Knights forwards. Conversely, the Knights tossed it up from the perimeter, with more than half of their shots coming from beyond the 3-point arc. Clarkson made seven of those attempts, including three from Rey Jefferson (Budd Lake, NJ). Regardless of how each team got there, the game was tied up at 36-36 going into intermission.

Clarkson started the second half with a 3-pointer from Jefferson, but the Saints then went on a 10-2 run to take a small five-point lead four minutes into the period. Though Clarkson closed the gap to one point, St. Lawrence built its lead back up to eight points after a layup from Ralph Temgoua at the 7:03 mark. However, the Knights shut the Saints down over the next five minutes and went on a 10-0 run, completed by a Jefferson 3-pointer at the 2:39 mark. Temgoua broke the string with a lay in at 1:29, tying the game up at 64-64.

St. Lawrence had possession of the ball following a timeout with 56 seconds to go, but the Saints missed a jumper from the top of the key. However, underneath the basket sat Nick Meunier, who gathered up the rebound and was fouled on the put back attempt. He sunk both to give St. Lawrence a two-point advantage, and Garrett Sharlow made two more free throws with nine seconds to go for a 68-64 lead. Junior Felix Llanos (Queens, NY) buried a 3-pointer from the corner to draw the Knights back to within one with three seconds left, but St. Lawrence’s long inbound pass bounced around harmlessly as the clock ran out.

Jefferson finished with 17 points, making five 3-point field goals in the process, while Nate Uline (Gansevoort, NY) added 15 points in 23 minutes on 6-for-9 shooting. For St. Lawrence, Sharlow also had 17 points while Temgoua produced 15 points. Meunier finished with 14 points.
