Saints honored by Liberty League
Seven St. Lawrence University student-athletes and a crew boat were honored by the Liberty League Monday afternoon for their performances during the last week.
The St. Lawrence University men's cross country team, ranked sixth in the nation, claimed the 2010 NYSCTC Championship on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY. Senior Dan Ramsey earned "Performer of the Week" honors as he won the 2010 NYSCTC Championship title for the second straight year. The Essex Junction, VT native's time of 25:12 on the 8k course also landed Ramsey NYSCTC Runner of the Year honors.The women's cross country team, ranked second in the nation, also claimed the 2010 NYSCTC Championship for the third straight year. Senior Wendy Pavlus earned "Performer of the Week" honors as she won the 2010 NYSCTC Championship title by over a minute on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY. The Tupper Lake, NY native raced the 5k course in 16:49 and was also named the NYSCTC Runner of the Year.
Also earning Liberty League honors was first-year student Amanda Moreland who earned "Co-Rookie of the Week". The Bloomfield, NY native was 8th overall in the race in 18:14 and was named the NYSCTC Rookie of the Year for her efforts.
On the gridiron, the Saints continue to impress as they defeated the RPI Engineers to remain on top of the Liberty League standings. Junior Marcus Washington earned "Co-Offensive Performer of the Week" as he piled up 136 yards rushing on Saturday in the Saints' 14-3 victory. It was the third straight Liberty League game that the Pahokee, FL native rushed for 100+ yards.
First-year student Victor Coker Jr. earned "Co-Rookie of the Week" for his outstanding play along the offensive line for St. Lawrence. The Syracuse, NY native helped the Saints post 241 yards of offense, and the team ran behind Coker Jr. throughout the game en route to 136 yards of rushing offense.
On the soccer field the men's soccer team went 3-0 for the week, allowing just one goal in the three games. Junior Mike Manfredi earned "Defensive Performer of the Week" as he turned in a trio of outstanding defensive performances and played a key role in the Saints victory over Hamilton despite playing shorthanded for the final 18 minutes of the game. The Saints successfully clinched the top seed in the Liberty League tournament.
On the women's side, Deven Shatkin earned "Co-Defensive Performer of the Week" as she scored the Saint goal off a corner kick in a 2-1 double overtime loss to 10th-ranked William Smith, and was outstanding defensively both against the Herons and in a 2-1 upset of Hamilton.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their 2010-11 seasons, traveling to Potsdam, NY to battle the Clarkson Golden Knights. Junior Andrew Hayes earned "Co-Swimmer of the Week" as he helped the Saints to a 115-105 win. The Avon, NY native swam on the first place 200 Medley relay team and then outtouched a Clarkson opponent in the 200 Free for a first place finish of his own. He also added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke.
The women's swimming and diving team handily defeated the Clarkson Golden Knights on Saturday, 132-71. First-year student Katharina Weidhausser earned "Rookie of the Week" as she made a solid college debut with victories in the 200 free (2:18.57) and 100 butterfly (1:10.71), helping the Saints to victory. The Oettingen, Germany native also swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay, helping St. Lawrence to a win in the event.
Lastly, the Saints crew teams traveled to Boston, MA to take part in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday. The women's varsity 8+ posted the program's best finish with a time of 17:18.094, claiming seventh place out of 31 total entries and fifth out of all Division III entries. The eight was stroked by senior Elizabeth Stokes-Cawley, while classmate Lauren Reed was the coxswain. Also rowing for St. Lawrence was senior Catie Lepage and sophomores Maggie Fellows, Maddie Fones, Britton Weber, Alissa McCaffrey, Kaitlin Summers and Jesse Burdett.
