Saints Durham earns podium finish in Slalom

St. Lawrence University sophomore Ashley-Kate Durham earned her third collegiate podium finish on Saturday in Lake Placid, NY, as Timmins, ON native was third overall in the slalom at the 2011 St. Lawrence Carnival. On the men's side, rookie Ben DeFlavio picked up his first collegiate top-20 finish on Whiteface Mountain.

UVM swept the alpine events again on Saturday, with the men's team winning with 132.0 points and the women with 134.0. The Saint women were fifth overall with 67.0 points while the men were sixth with 65.0.

Durham, who had a fifth place finish in the GS on Friday, continued to shine in the slalom. Her time of 1:40.44 landed the Scarlet and Brown 44.0 points in the carnival and 60 towards an NCAA bid.

Senior Kelly Skinner and sophomore Ann West rounded out the scoring for the second consecutive race. Skinner was 35th overall while West followed in 44th position. First-year student Caroline Barry (46th), junior Elena Rogers (DNF) and rookie Hayley Best (DQ) also competed in the women's slalom for the host school.

Meanwhile, DeFlavio improved upon a 21st place finish from Friday with an 18th place showing on Saturday. The Waitsfield, VT native led the Saints with a combined time of 1:34.42 for 25.0 points. He was joined in the scoring by senior Thatcher Jacques in 20th place, his third career top-20, and rookie Dustin Martin in 26th. Junior Scott Houser rounded out the team's line-up in 30th place.

Megan Ryley of UVM claimed the women's slalom individual title with a time of 1:39.28, while UNH's Paul Atkinson won the men's event in 1:30.67.

The St. Lawrence Alpine ski teams will be in action again next weekend, Friday and Saturday, January 21 and 22, at the 2011 Colby Carnival at Sugarloaf.
