Junior Garrett Sharlow's double-double led the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team to a thrilling 66-64 victory over Hobart College in the Burkman Gymnasium Saturday night.
St. Lawrence, which is the only team to defeat Hobart in league play, improves to an even 11-11 overall with a 7-5 mark in the conference. Hobart moves to 18-5 overall with a 10-2 record in the league.
Joining Sharlow in double-figures was classmate Ralph Temgoua with 16 points, while sophomore Kyle Miller added eight points, including two three-pointers. Ben Araya, St. Lawrence's lone senior, played his last game in the Burkman Gymnasium, contributing eight points and four rebounds for the Saints.
Hobart, which trailed 23-21 at halftime, was led by Matt Pebole's 26 points and eight rebounds. Tim Llewellyn went 3-of-6 from behind the arc for nine points, while Richie Bonney added 10 rebounds for the Statesmen.
The two teams battled throughout the entire 40:00 minutes of action, which saw four ties and eight lead changes. Neither team was able to build a lead larger than five points.
St. Lawrence gained momentum at the 1:38 mark as Temgoua made a layup and was fouled. He converted the free throw to give the Saints a three point lead at 59-56 but Llewellyn countered with a three-pointer to tie the game back up at 59-59.
With under a minute to play, Temgoua sank a three pointer to bring the score to 62-59 but Pebole brought his team back to within one point with a layup. The Saints were sent to the free throw line twice in the last twenty seconds, converting 4-of-4 attempts and pushing their lead to five points, 66-61. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Stefan Thompson was not enough, and the Saints were able to celebrate the 66-64 victory on their home court.
The Saints travel to Skidmore and Union next weekend to complete regular season play.
