Saints, Black Bears skate to 1-1 tie

Jacob Nielsen scored his first goal of the season and rookie netminder Francis Boisvert finished with 36 saves as the St. Lawrence men's hockey team battled visiting Maine to a 1-1 tie on Saturday night at the Roos House Ice Arena at SUNY Canton.

Nielsen's tally midway through the first period put the Saints in front early, and they held that lead until the final five minutes of regulation when Maine's Tim Doherty tied the game with a power play goal.

The Black Bears finished with a 37-22 advantage in shots on goal and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while St. Lawrence finished 0-for-6.

In the first period, Bo Hanson made a play at the blue line to keep the puck in the offensive zone and sent Carson Dimoff and Nielsen in two-on-two, as Dimoff hit Nielsen with a cross-crease backhand pass for a one-time finish and a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.

Dimoff picked up his first point of the season with the primary assist on Saturday.

The Saints' lead held through the second and was nearly pushed to 2-0 in the final seconds of the middle frame from Aleksi Peltonen forced a turnover and set up linemate Keenan Suthers with a shot from the circle. Suthers was stopped by Maine's Jeremy

Swayman, who then came across in a full split to rob Jordan Steinmetz on a sprawling rebound chance to keep it a one-goal game.

Swayman also stopped Suthers on a partial breakaway near the midway point of the third with a poke check in the crease as the Tecumseh, Ontario native cut across from the left side for a backhand try.

Later in the third, Maine got a bounce deep in the slot after Mitchell Fossier's shot hit traffic in front, but got the Saints' penalty kill unit moving to the left, leaving Doherty wide open on the right circle for a quick pass and finish into the open net before Boisvert could recover at the 15:03 mark of the third.

Maine got an offensive zone draw with less than two seconds to play in regulation and Adam Dawe was able to get away but was stopped by the right pad of Boisvert at the buzzer to send things to overtime.

The Saints' best opportunity in the extra frame was a two-on-one for Suthers and Kaden Pickering. Pickering elected to shoot but was stopped by Swayman with the knob of his stick.

With the tie, the Saints move to 3-11-2 on the season, while Maine is now 8-5-3 overall.

St. Lawrence will conclude its first semester schedule next weekend with a single ECAC Hockey game at Clarkson on Saturday, December 7.
