Saint women 3rd, men 6th in 2011 swim Liberty League championships

St. Lawrence University's women's team posted its best finish in the program's Liberty League history with a third and the men's team placed sixth at the 2011 Liberty League Swimming and Diving Championships at Rensselaer on Saturday.

The Saint women had a 56 point lead on fourth place Union heading into Saturday's final six events, and opened it up to nearly 100 points going into the final event of the meet with top tens in each of the first five events of the final session. The Saints previous best team finish was a fourth last year. Rochester won both men's and women's titles. The Yellowjackets had 1115.5 points in the women's meet with RPI second with 629.5, the Saints third with 465 and Union fourth with 371 in an eight-team field.

Casey Abribat had a big Saturday, improving her own record with a second place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:11.38, she was fourth in the early session Saturday in the 400 IM in 4:46.49 and she was a member of the 200 medley relay team which was third in 1:54.32. She was joined by Elizabeth Canne, Katharina Weidhausser and Samantha Moffitt on the medley relay.

Russell Newton had a fourth in the 400 individual medley and came back for a third in the 1650 free later in the early session on Saturday to help the Saint men to a sixth place standing heading into the final session.

In Saturday's early session, the Saint women scored well in the 100 fly with three swimmers finishing in the top ten. Moffitt had the top finish in the 100 fly with a fifth in 1:00.66 while Natalie Dellinger was sixth in 1:01.07 and Weidhausser was eighth in 1:01.12. All three swimmers turned in their best time of the year thus far in the event. Weidhausser also had a top ten finish in the 200 free with a ninth place finish in 2:03.36. Canne was fourth in 1:10.37 and Zinnia Smith was ninth in 1:12.83 in the 100 breaststroke while Brynne Hagen was fourth in 1:01.99 and Molly Sneden ninth in 1:04.68 in the 100 backstroke. Molly Lunn added an eighth place in the 1650.

Newton's third in 17:01.69 in the 1650 and fourth place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.60 were the highlights of the morning session for the men on Saturday. Andrew Hayes added seventh place finish in the 200 free in 1:48.19 and Jason Dutra was eighth in the 100 fly in 54.42. Dutra added a tenth place finish in the 100 back in 55.61 and Alex Root was ninth in the 1650 in 17:35.32.

Hagen added a fourth place finish in the 200 back in the evening session while Moffitt placed fifth in 54.82 in the 100 free, Canne was sixth and Smith eighth in the 200 breaststroke, Weidhausser was eighth in the 200 fly and Chastity Barcomb was seventh in the three meter diving with a score of 324.40. The Saints 400 free relay team of Hagen, Natalie Dellinger, Canne and Abribat was sixth in 3:50.10.

For the men, Hayes was fifth in 2:00.75 and Dutra sixth in the 200 back for the Saint top ten finishes in the second Saturday session. The Saint 400 free relay team of Root, Newton, Kirby Kaylor and Dutra finished eighth.
