CANTON -- Kamrie Dandrow (Russell, N.Y.) notched her first career goal on Monday as the SUNY Canton women’s soccer team battled St. Lawrence College of Kingston. And the goal proved to be the game-winner as the Roos captured a 1-0 win on their home turf.

SUNY Canton evened their overall mark at 1-1 and will head to New Paltz this weekend for the Hawks’ Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament. The Roos face New Jersey City University on Saturday and SUNY Maritime on Sunday.

Monday afternoon the Roos used crisp passing, a strong offensive attack and a solid defensive effort to earn the hard-fought win over the Vikings. SUNY Canton controlled the offensive tempo of the game throughout the 90 minutes and held a 9-3 advantage in shots. Seven of SUNY Canton’s shots went on goal and defensively the Roos did an excellent job protecting freshman goalie Colleen Fagan (Bath, N.Y.) limiting St. Lawrence to just one shot on goal in the second half which was easily handled by the Bath-Haverling graduate.

“The ladies played very, very well today,” said head coach Kate-Thomas Moody. “They did everything we asked of them and our defensive line really made it tough for St. Lawrence to break through and mount any offensive attack. “

The Roos hard work finally paid off in the 75th minute when junior forward Bailey Allen (Dekalb Junction, N.Y.) made the decisive run leading to the game-winning score. Allen gathered in the ball about 20 yards inside midfield and fed Dandrow on the left wing. The Edwards-Know graduate then delivered a hard, low shot past Vikings goalie Ashley Houghton to break the scoreless tie.

“It was great to feel all of the terrific energy the players had today,” Thomas-Moody added. “I am very proud of them.”
