(Amherst, N.Y.)- The 12th-ranked SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team won the Blizzard in Buffalo Tournament for the second straight year as they defeated John Carroll University 4-1 in the championship game Saturday night in Amherst, N.Y.

The Roos wrap up the first half of the year improving to 18-0-3 overall as they beat John Carroll for the third straight time in the last three meetings between the two schools. SUNY Canton topped the Blue Streaks 8-2 in the first round of last year’s Buffalo tournament and also captured a 5-2 win in the first round of this year’s Terry Martin / Alumni Classic on Nov. 18.

The Roos entered the weekend averaging 7.0 goals per game but struggled to score through the first two periods on Friday.

“We were definitely off tonight and really didn’t generate any quality shots until the final period,” said head coach Eric McCambly.

The Roos did lead 1-0 after one period when Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) notched his 10th goal of the season from Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) and Sean Gallagher (Sandwich, Mass.) at the 8:35 mark of the opening frame.

John Carroll tied the score at one apiece when Tyler Rhodes scored an unassisted power play goal with 1:22 left in the second stanza and that’s the way the score would stand heading into the final period.

SUNY Canton finally came to life in the final 20 minutes and reeled off three unanswered goals to take home the hardware for the second straight year.

John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) scored the game-winning goal 3:51 into the final stanza when he connected from Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.). Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored from J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) at the 16:42 mark making it 3-1 and Liggio added the Roos final goal with 2:22 left in regulation off assists from Payne and Brad Wilson (Orleans, Ontario) on the power play.

Michael Pittman (Amarillo, Texas) faced 16 shots and turned aside 15 to post his seventh win this year.

Justin Camuto had 34 saves on 38 shots for John Caroll.

The Roos return to the ice on Jan. 7 when the travel to western New York for a game at Rochester Institute of Technology.
