(Canton, N.Y.)- The second round of the 2011-12 Eastern Collegiate Hockey League tournament is all set following Friday night’s two first-round games and No. 2 SUNY Canton will face No. 3 Niagara University Saturday night.
Niagara beat No. 6 Rochester Institute of Technology 4-1 in the opening round and No. 5 Canisius College upset No. 4 University at Buffalo 3-1. The Griffs will face top-seeded Mercyhurst University at 4 p.m. on Saturday and the Roos and Purple Eagles face off at 7:30 p.m.
The Roos earned a first-round bye finishing second in the league during the regular season and swept the season series with Niagara with a pair of home wins over the Purple Eagles. On Feb. 13 the Roos trailed 2-1 with time winding down in regulation when freshman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) tied the game and sent it into overtime scoring with 2.8 seconds on the clock. Senior Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) then won the game in the extra session with an unassisted goal with 2:17 remaining.
The next day the Roos routed Niagara 7-0 scoring four power play goals and two short-handed goals and they also killed off a pair of five-on-three Niagara power plays. Senior Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) and junior John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) each scored a short-handed goal, freshman Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) scored twice and freshman Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) picked up his second win of the weekend with a 20-save shutout.
The two winners on Saturday will meet in the championship game on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
