(Canton, N.Y.) – The SUNY Canton softball team utilized a powerful and dominating hitting performance on Saturday as they rolled to a pair of five inning wins over Fisher College in Canton.  The Roos improved to 2-0 in the Sunrise Conference winning 12-1 and 11-2.

The Roos began their quest to defend their conference championship as they blasted four home runs and cranked out 25 hits on the day including 10 for extra bases.  SUNY Canton also turned in a solid defensive effort as the Roos didn’t commit any errors and made several terrific plays in both the infield and the outfield.

In the first game the Roos made quick work of the Falcons as they raced out to an 11-1 lead after just three innings.  Six of those runs came in the second inning thanks to a two-run homer to left field by freshman catcher Emiley Walters (Lancaster, N.Y.).  Seniors Jenifer Shaw (Helendale, Calif.) and Carolina Olivares (Adelanto, Calif.) each had an RBI-double in the inning and sophomore Colleen Rivers (Bayport, N.Y.) added an RBI single.

Olivares and Rivers also had home runs as Olivares went deep for a three-run shot in the third inning and Rivers connected for a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning.

The Roos jumped out early in the nightcap as well pounding out nine runs on nine hits in the first two innings.  SUNY Canton tacked on two more runs in the third inning, one coming on a solo, deep home run to left by freshman Lyndsay Coppola (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and again the Roos shut down the Falcons defensively to earn the sweep.

Olivares went 3-for-3 in the first game and 2-for-2 in the second game and finished the day with six RBIs and two doubles.  Freshman Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) smacked a double in each game and collected four RBIs.  Shaw also two doubles and finished with three RBIs and Rivers ended with three hits and four RBIs.

Sophomore Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) won both games on the mound.  She tossed a four-hitter and struck out four batters in game one and scattered five hits in the nightcap before giving way to sophomore Jessica Measheaw (Hammond, N.Y.) who pitched the final inning in relief.

Demi Bourous had a home run in the first game for the Falcons and Jessica Augusta went 2-for-2 in game two.

The two teams square off again on Sunday in another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. in Canton.
