(Syracuse, N.Y.)- Senior Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.), freshman Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.) and sophomore Eric Richard (St-Hubert, Quebec) each scored two goals leading the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team to an 8-2 win over Syracuse University in an ACHA Division I game on Saturday.
The 12th-ranked Roos improved to 20-0-3 overall with yet another convincing win in an already impressive 2011-12 campaign.
SUNY Canton fell behind 1-0 after one period after Syracuse’s Simon Hebert scored the only goal of the first stanza at the 5:16 mark.
Senior Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) tied the game at 1-1 just 1:08 into the second period scoring from freshman J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) and junior Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.). The Orange went back ahead a minute later but their lead was short lived when freshman Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) dead locked the game once again scoring from Cibelli at the 4:36 mark. SUNY Canton scored twice more in the period off the sticks of Liggio and Wight and took a 4-2 lead into the final period.
Liggio and Wight scored again in the final period and Richard netted both of his goals in the final 20 minutes to send the Roos to the win.
Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) turned aside 21 of 23 shots for the Roos in goal to record his team-leading ninth win this year.
Simon Hebert had a goal and an assist for the Orange and Andrew Collingham made 40 saves.
The Roos are next in action Jan. 20-21 when they head to Erie, Pa. for a two-game ECHL series with Mercyhurst College.
