(Canton, N.Y.)- Senior John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) and sophomore J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, N.J.) each scored twice and freshman goalie Luis Puig (Chicago, Ill.) stopped 29 of 32 shots to lift the SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team past Assumption College 6-3 Saturday afternoon at Roos House.

SUNY Canton earned their first win of the season and it was also the first victory for first-year head coach Carl Michaelson.

“It’s always gratifying to get a win,” said Michaelson. “I was very proud of our effort in the third period and the guys played hard and played for each other and that’s what our message was in the locker room and our objective heading into the third period. They should really hold their heads high tonight.”

The Roos broke open a 2-2 game after two periods pumping in four goals in the final period to knock off the Division II Greyhounds and earn a weekend split.

Sophomore Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.) started the surge scoring at the 3:40 mark of the final period. Senior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) skated out from the behind the net and sent a backhand pass across the slot to Wight who one-timed a shot past Assumption goalie Bobby Bowden. Two minutes later the Roos struck again when sophomore Bill Ousey (Fairless Hills, Pa.) carried the puck from his own end and just inside the blue line snapped a shot on goal that Bowden initially stopped, but he couldn’t control the puck and it dropped behind him for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal and a 4-2 advantage. Frizell and Wight assisted on the goal.

Assumption got one back at the 7:25 mark when Mike Janson scored the Greyhounds final goal of the day. Lafferty netted his second goal with the Roos on the power play near the midway mark of the period. Just seven seconds into the power play Lafferty scored from the left circle with assists going to Wight and senior Brad Wilson (Orleans, Ontario). Payne then completed the scoring with 46 seconds left in regulation. Assumption was on another power play after freshman Jordan Grimsley (Parrish, Fla.) was whistled for elbowing with 1:42 left and the Greyhounds pulled Bowden for a 6-on-4 advantage. Payne outraced several players to a loose puck at center ice and broke in all alone for the short-handed, empty net goal. Junior Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) assisted on the goal.

Payne had also scored in the second period and Lafferty’s first goal also came in the second stanza off a rocket from the blue line.

Puig was outstanding in his first collegiate start as the freshman made 10 saves in the first period, five in the second and 14 big stops in the final period allowing the Roos to hold onto their lead.

Bowden finished with 28 saves for Assumption.

The Roos are on the road for the next 11 games starting next weekend when they play a two-game series at Stonehill College Nov. 2-3. Their next home games are Dec. 7 and 8 when they host Rhode Island for two games.
