(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team closed out the regular season winning their seventh straight game as they rolled over RIT 11-2 Saturday on senior night in Canton.

The Roos improved to 27-2-3 overall and 8-2 in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League and have clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming league tournament in Canton along with a first-round bye.

Prior to the start of the third period the four seniors on this year’s team, forwards Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.), Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) and Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) and defenseman A.J. Royce (Somers, Conn.) were honored along with their parents. The four players have amassed incredible four-year careers as they’ve combined to play in 461 games with a record of 97 wins against just 30 losses and three ties. The four have scored a total of 192 goals with 237 assists for an amazing 429 points. Liggio (69 goals-74 assists, 143 points), Camp (64 goals-69 assists, 133 points), and Cibelli (52 goals, 61 assists, 113 points) each eclipsed the 100-point mark this season and Royce has scored eight goals with 35 assists for 43 points from the blue line.

“These guys have been the foundation of hard work and what SUNY Canton hockey is all about,” said head coach Eric McCambly, who was also honored on Friday for winning his 100th game at SUNY Canton. “These guys bleed blue and gold. Rob and Darren have tremendous work ethics and are very talented players. Dan continuously got better and better over his four years and A.J. made the best of his opportunity here, has been a two-year captain and terrific leader. These guys have just been invaluable to our program.”

Cibelli had two goals and two assists on Saturday, Camp had one goal and two assists and Liggio contributed one goal.

Sophomore goalie Michael Pittman (Amarillo, Texas) backstopped the Roos win turning aside 25 of the 27 shots he faced including an RIT breakaway with seconds left in regulation.

The Roos jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage when freshman Jake McCombs (Sandwich, Mass.) scored from junior Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) just 2:25 into the contest. That score would hold until the Roos opened the floodgates pumping in four goals in a six-minute span to lead 5-0 after one.

That run extended to 9-0 before the Tigers finally got on the board late in the second period. The Roos then scored twice in the final stanza and RIT once for the final score.

McCombs and freshman Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each finished with two goals. Sophomore Eric Richard (St-Hubert, Quebec), freshman Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, Ind.), and freshman James Kane (Jamison, Pa.) each scored once. Frizell, who leads the ACHA in assists, finished with three and freshman Thomas Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had two.

Dominic Dicioccio scored twice for the Tigers and Ian Harris recorded 37 saves.

The ECHL Tournament will be held Friday, Feb. 24 – Sunday, Feb. 26 at Roos House. As the No. 2 seed the Roos will play the highest remaining seed after Friday’s first-round games at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25. Mercyhurst University clinched the ECHL regular season championship and the No. 1 seed. The rest of the seedings will be announced early next week.
