(Lake Placid, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team rang in the new year with an afternoon game against St. Anselm College in the historic 1980 Herb Brooks Arena, the site where the United States captured the gold medal in the 1980 Olympic Games. The Roos ran into a tough Hawks team as they lost 5-2.

Canton natives Rob Liggio and Darren Camp, who are tied for second on the team in scoring with 28 points apiece after the first semester, combined for both goals for the Roos (17-4) on Saturday. Liggio scored twice both off assists from Camp. At the 14:18 mark of the second period Liggio scored his first from Camp on the power play to trim the Hawks lead to 3-1.

After St. Anselm scored twice to start the third period Liggio connected again from Camp, this time short-handed with 12:44 left in the final period. Liggio is now tied for the team-lead in short-handed goals with two.

Michael Pittman (Amarillo, Texas) played the first 30 minutes in goal for SUNY Canton and stopped 16 of 19 shots. Matt Cray (Merrimack, N.H.) finished the game and turned aside 16 of 18 shots.

"We had a very good effort today against a very good hockey team," said SUNY Canton head coach Eric McCambly.

St. Anselm leading scorer Tucker Mullin had one goal and one assist to lead the Hawks. Kevin Fairweather had 11 saves in just over 30 minutes in goal and Corey Cotnoir had 15 saves the rest of the way.

The Roos return to Eastern Collegiate Hockey League play on Friday, Jan. 7 when they host Rochester Institute of Technology at 7:30 p.m. at the Canton Pavilion.
