(Presque Isle, ME) The SUNY Canton baseball team took two games from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 17-11 and 9-3, on a frigid afternoon in northern Maine today.
The Roos jumped to an early lead with a four-hit, four run first inning started by lead-off batter Gerard Torres (Stafford, Va.) hitting a double to center field. Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) walked, and Jared Marckese (Lecanton, Fla.) grounded out to third base, bringing Torres home. Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, NY) continued his offensive streak at bat with a double to center field, which brought Jones home. Josh Jones (Brockville, Ontario) hit a two RBI single to center, advancing Hunneyman and Will McIntyre (Ottawa, Ontario) across the plate.
The first inning started The Roos offense and the bats stayed hot for the next four innings. Canton had an eight-hit, eight-run third inning, which saw the Roos bat around the order started off with Tom Darling (Oswego, NY) hitting a double down the right field line. Josh Jones batted Darling home, while Dylan Cassleman (Brockville, Ontario) singled to center field. Pier Santini (Washington Heights, NY) came up big at the plate with a two RBI triple, scoring Casselman and Jones. Also scoring for the Roos in the third were Santini, Torres, Marckese, Chris Jones and Hunneyman.
On the mound for the Roos was senior Josh Soffer (Ottawa, Ontario) who pitched five innings, giving up only two hits and striking out five in the outing, earning the win. Relieving Soffer for the sixth inning was Mike Zelyez (Brasher Falls, NY) who gave up no hits and struck out one.
UMPI attempted a comeback in the seventh but fell short as the Roos took game one with 20 hits and 16 RBIs.
