Potsdam falls late at Fredonia in men's soccer

The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback at Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference match on Friday afternoon.

The Blue Devils scored with just over three minutes remaining to hand the Bears (2-11-1 overall, 1-6 SUNYAC) their third consecutive one-goal loss where their opponent has scored the game-winner in the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Senior Bobby Kane (Glens Falls, N.Y.) put the Bears on the board with a penalty kick in the 40th minute, tying the game at 1-1 just before the half.

With a strong wind at its back, Fredonia (6-8, 4-2) kept the pressure on the Potsdam defense throughout the second half before finally breaking through in the 87th minute.

"They were throwing everything at us with a strong wind at their back," Potsdam coach Adam Parker said. "Fredonia has very good players and is very dangerous. If we had held them off and gotten the wind in overtime, maybe things would have been different. I can't fault our guys for a lack of effort."

The Blue Devils totaled 29 shots in the match, compared to 10 for the Bears. Fredonia recorded its first goal in the 30th minute on a throw-in misplayed by the Potsdam defense.

Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Glackin (Latham, N.Y.) tallied nine saves for the Bears. Kane posted four shots, including two on goal.

Potsdam looks to rebound tomorrow with a game at Buffalo State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
