POTSDAM -- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team will host the Victory Promotions Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11.
The tournament, which features 10 NCAA Division III teams from around New York state, will be played at Potsdam's Jerry Welsh Gymnasium and St. Lawrence's Burkman Gymnasium.
"This is high-quality Division III volleyball showcasing teams from around New York," Potsdam coach Steve Pike said. "We have one NCAA Tournament participant and a number of teams with 20 or more wins from last season. There are kids from all over the country on our rosters ... it's a melting pot of volleyball talent."
Play begins Friday at 4 p.m. with three rounds of matches at each site and continues Saturday at 11 a.m. Two of the three rounds each day will hold multiple matches simultaneously.
"There is a lot of volleyball to be played with multiple matches going on at once," Pike said.
The Bears opened the 2010 season with one win at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic last weekend. Potsdam won the opening set in each of the four matches it played. Senior captain Erica Romaniello (Selden, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the team with 89 digs for the weekend.
This year's VPI Tournament participants include Buffalo St., Clarkson, Hamilton, Morrisville, Potsdam, Oswego, Plattsburgh, RIT, St. Lawrence and SUNYIT.
Victory Promotions, Inc., will provide all player awards and coaches gifts for the tournament. Angelo's of Potsdam will provide food for match officials.
